Last weekend I met some people from my video collaboration channel, nerdfightastic. It was pretty awesome. We met at Cedar Point and then hung out after we were done riding roller coasters.
I've been making videos with these people since last November and talking with them on skype for about as long. And so when I met them it wasn't weird at all. It was like we all knew each other (because we did) and we just hung out as if it wasn't our first time meeting. The thing that stuck out most about everyone was their vulnerability. A lot of times in youtube or on the internet, we are exactly who we want to be. We can hide behind text, or editing of a video but in real life even though we have our defense mechanisms, there is still more reality to us than we know.
For me it was very interesting to see my friends as more vulnerable. It was wonderful to meet them and see them "unscripted." But most of all, it was wonderful to see them exactly as they were, and to see that who they are on the internet isn't much different than who they are in real life... and that makes me happy.
