In the film Karate Kid II the main character, Daniel, shows up at Mr. Miyagi's house after prom and starts telling him about everything that is going wrong in his life. He tells Mr. Miyagi that he is stressed out and that his life is out of balance and how horrible things are. Mr. Miyagi tells him that when things are out of balance he needs to return to basics, and the most basic is breathing properly. While Mr. Miyagi is a fictional character he sure is awesome. Deep breathing has been shown to relieve stress, and help people think clearly.
I'm going to be honest, some days I feel like I have no strength at all. I feel like the world is too much, and I don't even know if I have the strength to stand. Yet somehow, here I am. I am still standing, I am still breathing, and I haven't given up yet. If there is anything on earth that we should be obligated to stand in awe of, it is the unbeatable human spirit. Sure, there are those people who have truly given up, but how many people do you know who simply refuse to give in? For every crappy thing that comes your way have you ever actually given up? I'm guessing not. And that is the most hopeful thing I have ever encountered, the fact that for some reason, I can not give up. When the world gets to be too much, I just breath and then keep going. I just take it back to basics, and then start again. Mr. Miyagi, I know you aren't real, however thank you for reminding me to breathe.
